Top 10 Movies of 2013 (That I’ve seen so far…)

by Matt Friend. 0 Comments

TOP 10 MOVIES OF 2013: I have seen 54 movies from 2013 so far. That’s more than any other single year for me (and I largely have my job at the theater to thank for that). This is probably the first year where I feel as though I’ve seen enough movies to do a justifiable top 10 list. I can guarantee that this won’t be my final list for this year. There are a lot of films I haven’t seen, many of which haven’t been made widely available, such as: HER INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS DALLAS BUYERS ... read more

Looking Forward – 24 Movies I’m Looking Forward to Next Year

by Matt Friend. 0 Comments

In lieu of doing any actual reviews, it’s getting to that time of year where I’ll look forward to the coming attractions of the New Year. Just as a rule, the movies I include here are movies whose American wide release is actually IN 2014, even if they had a foreign or limited release this year. Also some of these only have tentative release dates this set year and may be pushed back to next year. So without further ado, here are the twenty one films I’m most looking forward to next year. THE ... read more

*note* For what few readers I have, I've fallen behind on blog posts due to work and other projects kind of getting in the way. I'll try to be more consistent from here on out, but for now here's one that fell to the wayside when things got busy. I think there still might be a showing at the Regal Westview, so be sure and check it out if you can. PRISONERS (2013) DIRECTED BY: Denis Villeneuve WRITTEN BY: Aaron Guzikowski STARRING: Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Maria Bello, ... read more

The Grandmaster (2013)

DIRECTED BY: Wong Kar-Wai WRITTEN BY: Wong Kar-Wai STARRING: Tony Leung, Zhang Ziyi, Chang Chen, Zhao Benshan, Song Hye-Kyo, Wang Quingxiang I can’t really make up my mind about The Grandmaster. On the one hand, visually, it’s an absolutely incredible film. The cinematography and fight choreography are excellent, even beautiful sometimes. On the other hand, though, story-wise, I can’t really convince myself it’s anything other than a giant mess. If I were to apply an analogy, it’d ... read more

The Wizard of Oz IMAZ 3D(or: how I leard to stop trying to justyfy 3D conversions and love the film)

by Matt Friend. 0 Comments

Watching The Wizard of Oz in 3D is a really interesting experience, and probably not for the reasons you might be thinking. I should probably mention first that the 3D on display here was overall very effective (much to my surprise). There wasn't that issue of eye-strain caused by the multitude of moving objects on-screen like Jurassic Park and Pacific Rim's conversions had. Sure there were some inconsistencies, with a number of scenes that more "3D-ified" than others, but overall it really did ... read more
