You Have My Heart

by Karen Peacock. 0 Comments

Marie Riccio has been a member of The Artists' Gallery for several years. This is her third year participating in the gallery's Box Show.  You Have My Heart began as a simple cigar box. The artist covered the exterior with wrappers of the her  favorite chocolate, Mast Brothers in Brooklyn. The interior is covered with the inside wrappers from the chocolate bars. Marie sewed the heart, and the buttons are from her collection. Some of them date back to the time when her grandfather ... read more

Boxing Day

The Artists' Gallery's 13th Annual Box Show opens  Friday. More than 50 artists participate, both TAG members and their guests. It's always a fun exhibit, but this could be the best yet. We were each given a box and had several weeks to create a work of art with it. This year, instead of the usual simple wooden boxes, we got to choose from an array of cigar boxes. It took awhile  to decide; there were some beauties! I chose a fairly small, plain one with a sliding lid. I liked the idea ... read more

Power to the PEEPle

by Karen Peacock. 0 Comments

If you're looking for an Easter-related field trip, you can't go wrong with a visit to Westminster. The Carroll Arts Center is presenting its 7th annual PEEPshow through April 21. You will see everything from shoe box dioramas to a  monumental high-heeled shoe. The show is free, but tokens can be purchased that will allow you to vote for your favorites among the 200 or so entries. I'm partial to works that rely primarily on Peeps, without the use of a lot of other materials. The homage ... read more

Art for All

by Karen Peacock. 0 Comments

One thing I love about living in Frederick is being able to do all my Christmas shopping without setting foot in a mall. The Muse and the Delaplaine's Gift Gallery are always good sources for unique and affordable gifts and cards. I also recommend The Artists Gallery at 4 East Church St. The cooperative has 20 members working in a variety of styles. This month, nothing is larger than 16X20.  A lot of the work is surprisingly inexpensive considering the quality. For example, you can find ... read more

While taking our post-Thanksgiving dinner waddle, we came across the holiday window at the corner of Bentz and Patrick. I'd seen it while driving by, but you really need to get up close. Those are real feathers on the wings of the flying pies. A Thanksgiving dream indeed. ... read more
