Weeks 1 and 2 HS Football Thoughts and Observations

by Greg Swatek. 0 Comments

Through two weeks of the 2015 high school football season, no team has separated itself from the rest of the pack. Sure, Linganore and Oakdale seem like the teams to beat, with a tier of capable teams like Tuscarora, Middletown, Walkersville and Urbana following close behind. But even the Lancers and Bears have shown vulnerabilities so far that make you wonder about their long-range prospects in a vicious region (the Class 3A West). Linganore's offense, expected to be the strength of the team, ... read more

HS Football Season Review

by Greg Swatek. 0 Comments

Frederick County's football season officially ended shortly before 10 p.m. on Nov. 14 as Linganore fell to Damascus, 14-13, in the Class 3A West championship game, an instant-classic that will be remembered for years to come. The stadium lights went dark twice in separate power outages. Two great defenses refused to yield. And Linganore went for the go-ahead 2-point conversion instead of attempting the potential game-tying extra point with 2 minutes and 1 second to play, a decision that will be ... read more

Regional Semifinal Review; Regional Final Preview

by Greg Swatek. 0 Comments

So, a strange high school football season in Frederick County comes down to this. Linganore (11-0), the lone-surviving team, travels to high-powered Damascus (11-0) Friday night for the Class 3A West championship game. It marks the second-straight appearance in a regional final for the Lancers, who reached the 3A championship game last season. The top-seeded Swarmin' Hornets, meanwhile, are in the regional championship game for the first time since 2010 when they won it. Both teams have similar ... read more

Week 10 HS Football Thoughts and Observations

by Greg Swatek. 0 Comments

After 10 weeks of the regular season, the three best teams in Frederick County football this season (Linganore, Urbana and Oakdale) deservedly made the playoffs. The other seven public-school teams certainly made the ride a lot more interesting along the way. But, for one reason or another, they ultimately came up short. Catoctin deserves a lot of credit for nearly qualifying for the postseason after an 0-4 start. The Cougars won their final six games, including a win over the No. 2 seed in the ... read more

Week 9 HS Football Thoughts and Observations

by Greg Swatek. 0 Comments

With the final week of the regular season and the Linganore-Urbana showdown on tap this week, the playoff picture is gradually coming into focus for Frederick County teams. Linganore (9-0) and Oakdale (7-2) are the only teams, at the moment, that are in for sure. The Lancers are the No. 2 seed in the West region of Class 3A right now, while the Bears are presently the top seed in the 2A West. Urbana (8-1) is in the 3A West draw with a home win over Linganore, while Catoctin (5-4) and Walkersville ... read more

Week 8 HS Football Thoughts and Observations

by Greg Swatek. 0 Comments

Little Catoctin High School, one of the smallest, if not the smallest, Class 2A school in the state, is authoring the comeback story of the season in Frederick County, if not the state. On Friday night, Catoctin went to Boonsboro, which has a home win over Middletown this season, and pulled out a 20-14 victory. Senior Ben Dewees, the team's quarterback, made the play of the game on defense when he intercepted a pass in the final minutes to thwart a potential game-winning scoring drive for Boonsboro. The ... read more

Week 7 HS Football Thoughts and Observations

by Greg Swatek. 0 Comments

Last Friday, Urbana's Ray Gray played one of those games you almost had to rub your eyes to believe. Gray's first carry went for a 75-yard touchdown. His fourth carry nearly went for a 57-yard touchdown and would have had he not slowed down ever so slightly, allowing a defender to catch him from behind by the shoestrings. His last three carries all went for touchdowns, including a final 79-yard, leave-everyone-else-in-the-dust blast over the right side that put him right alongside other immortals ... read more

Week 6 HS Football Thoughts and Observations

by Greg Swatek. 0 Comments

For one half last Friday night, the Linganore football team was pushed as hard as it has been all season. But then the Lancers cranked up their passing game in the second half and everything else fell into place on their way to a 35-13 road victory over upstart Oakdale. With its trademark running game struggling to gain yardage in the first half, Linganore (6-0) put the game in the hands of its junior quarterback Nathaniel Musselman, who responded with his best game for his new school. Musselman, ... read more

Week 5 HS Football Thoughts and Observations

by Greg Swatek. 0 Comments

Halfway through the season, the top three (Linganore, Urbana, Oakdale) has further established itself, while the three-time defending state champion in Class 2A, Middletown, continues to fight for its playoff life. The Knights (3-2) have faced and passed gut checks in each of the last two weeks. First, it was surviving a final-minute 2-point conversion attempt in a one-point road win at Walkersville. Then, last Thursday, they played a great second half to pull a roller-coaster home game with ... read more
