Netflix Pix – July 2015

Look at this - we did one day better than we did last month! That’s right. Instead of waiting until the very last day of the month, we’re coming back on the second-to-last day of the month! Take that, June. This month, as part of our five suggestions for what to stream from Netflix’s instant library, we have yet another documentary on good, old-fashioned pornography. We have a movie that’s pretty great to look at if you love food. We have one more episode of “Derek.” We have an Angelina ... read more

Look At That: The Emmys Happened

by Colin McGuire. 0 Comments

Because this is what happens when you move the show from a Sunday to a Monday: We can't get to it until Friday. So, yes. I'm fully aware that nobody reads this thing anyway. But commenting on something that happened four days ago? That's taking our version of pathetic to a new level. I mean, what is this? 2003? Yet I just can't help myself from adhering to tradition. And because we have yet to miss a year in our Emmy recap series, behold the fourth go-around, even if we are nearly a ... read more

And Now It’s Time To Talk About Season 2 Of ‘Derek’

Is there really a better time than the day of the Emmys to finally sit down and ramble about the second season of Netflix's "Derek?" That was rhetorical. Actually, I've been waiting specifically for this day to finally put the series' second run to rest on this here blog. Why is that? Well, that's because tonight, Ricky Gervais will have the opportunity to win one of those ballyhooed Statues Of Emmy in the Outstanding Actor In A Comedy category. Yeah, and about that. You can't find a bigger ... read more

And the nominees are … (Part 3)

OK. Two things: 1. Last year was a watershed moment for the Internet television medium, which was why we opted to ooze and gush over the mere fact that "House Of Cards" received a bevy of Emmy nominations. It opened the doors wide open for what happened this year (way more on that below), and it was a moment that forced us to opt against the usual Emmy format, if only for a year. And 2. Yes, I completely understand that the Emmy nominees were revealed six days ago. But this post is not ... read more

Netflix Pix – June 2014

June, oh June. You are hot. You are sweaty. And you are filled with music. No, but really. To the two-and-a-half of you who might still be reading, it's imperative to note why there seems to be an extended absence from this blog (as well as a slip-up on our annual upfronts coverage - sad face!). Well, that would be because of this: www.frederickplaylist.com The fine folks here at the Frederick News-Post have asked me to start up a new website dedicated solely to Frederick music. Thus, Frederick ... read more

Netflix tops 40 million subscribers. A good step? Of course. A game-changing leap? Hardly.

Here's a paragraph: "Worldwide, Netflix subscriptions have soared to more than 40 million, this year surpassing the U.S. subscriber base of Home Box Office (HBO) for the first time. At peak evening viewing hours, Netflix accounts for a staggering two-thirds of North American Internet traffic." That came, of course, from The Toronto Sun, which posted said paragraph at about 11 this morning. The headline? "Why Netflix is the new black." Cheeky. A lot has been made of the news last week ... read more

Netflix Pix – October 2013

October, October. Autumn is in full effect (despite the temperatures still staying in sweat-mode 'round these parts). Children get costumes (points for all those homemade Miley Cyrus wardrobes this year!). Adults buy candy (while secretly hoping the crowd is small and they can chomp away on it for the next six weeks). And I am reminded of the time that one family told me to "come back again tomorrow" because they were "out of stuff to give away" (I didn't do it). It also means a brand new crop ... read more

And Now It’s Time To Talk About ‘Derek.’

Well, that was quick. It took only weeks to blast through the seven, 20-some-odd-minute episodes of Ricky Gervais' latest series, "Derek," which also happens to be Netflix's latest offering in its original content catalogue. If Sept. 12 was "Derek Day" (and it was, as you'll see if you click that link), then today is the day we finally say ... And Now It's Time To Talk About "Derek." Boom. The short of it? The show's good in an unexpected way. That's not to say I didn't have high hopes ... read more

It’s Derek Day, friends.

Ricky Gervais and his gal, Jane Fallon. (Photo courtesy The Associated Press)“Netflix has 30 million subscribers now. They are one little company in L.A. and they are as big as the BBC." So said the brilliant Ricky Gervais to The Mirror's Mark Jefferies in January. This was before his latest series, "Derek," debuted across the big piece of water currently separating continents. He said it because people became upset at his program, claiming that it was exploitative to those who have special ... read more

Heeeeerrrreee’s Derek.

So ... we have "Downton Abbey" releasing its final three episodes on iTunes before they are broadcast on PBS. We have NBC premiering its second season of "Smash" to the six people who still care on Hulu weeks before it goes to television. And, most notably, we have Justin Bieber smoking pot and his friends taking pictures to prove it. OK. That last one was irrelevant, I know. But ... hoary for shameless plugs! Actually, even more notable than that (if you can belibe it — see what I did ... read more
