Oh, whoa. Hey there, CBS and HBO.

Well, when a gosh darn week like this gosh darn happens, you gosh darn make time to blog, gosh darn-it. Let's check out how witty The Reporters Who Cover Television (to steal from the best Lisa in the world) were in the last few days ... "If you’ve been considering cutting the cord to your cable-TV subscription, HBO may have just handed you the scissors," Time's James Poniewozik wrote on Wednesday. "In less than a day, the most critically acclaimed network and the most watched network ... read more

Netflix Wins Minor Battle, Posts To Facebook

by Colin McGuire. 0 Comments

Well, it's about time to check in with Netflix, don't you think? Better yet, it's probably about time to write a normal post for once. Hey-yo! Anyway, Big Red has been making news this week, reaching a handful of minor milestones along the way. In case if you were wondering about where I got the word "milestone" from, how about we turn to USA Today's Jayme Deerwester, who was one of many writers that took a screen grab of Reed Hastings' Facebook page ... "Emmy nominations aren't the only ... read more

And the nominees are … (Part 3)

OK. Two things: 1. Last year was a watershed moment for the Internet television medium, which was why we opted to ooze and gush over the mere fact that "House Of Cards" received a bevy of Emmy nominations. It opened the doors wide open for what happened this year (way more on that below), and it was a moment that forced us to opt against the usual Emmy format, if only for a year. And 2. Yes, I completely understand that the Emmy nominees were revealed six days ago. But this post is not ... read more

Netflix tops 40 million subscribers. A good step? Of course. A game-changing leap? Hardly.

Here's a paragraph: "Worldwide, Netflix subscriptions have soared to more than 40 million, this year surpassing the U.S. subscriber base of Home Box Office (HBO) for the first time. At peak evening viewing hours, Netflix accounts for a staggering two-thirds of North American Internet traffic." That came, of course, from The Toronto Sun, which posted said paragraph at about 11 this morning. The headline? "Why Netflix is the new black." Cheeky. A lot has been made of the news last week ... read more

The zen of HBO Go and let’s get ready for upfronts week!

First: Podcast. Movies. All right. So. Has anyone else caught wind of this Time magazine article profiling how young Americans don't want to pay for television anymore? No? Oh. Well, shame on you. Because as you'll see if you take a few minutes to read through only the first few paragraphs, you'll find a pretty worthwhile nugget of information. From the fabulous Rebecca Nelson ... "Bernadette Aulestia, HBO’s senior vice president of domestic network distribution, says the premium ... read more

TV stars make more money than you. In other news, rain is wet.

Absolutely first and foremost, I'd like to take a second to recognize the death of Mr. Marvin Hamlisch earlier this week. A million years ago, when I was barely able to drink (legally), he got on the phone to give an intern at a tiny newspaper in the middle of nowhere an interview that would lead to that stupid little intern's first actual, professional newspaper feature. He literally could not have been nicer, more understanding or forthcoming throughout all of those 30-plus minutes we spent talking ... read more

Why, hello again. How have you been?

So ... this has been spotty, hasn't it? The last few weeks have been a bit hectic, thus allowing me less time to babble about television, the Internet, technology and anything else of the like. My apologies for stepping out a bit. It wasn't because I don't love you. Just remember that. What do you normally do when you spend some time away? You catch up, silly. You spend some time gathering yourself and collecting thoughts about all the things you happened to miss. Yes, I kicked off the new year ... read more

It’s Saturday. I’m in love.

So, there was this, this and this. More would have been offered, too, had the sun not been mere minutes from rising. But work was in my future and at least a few hours of sleep were required for me to be a functioning human being the following day. "In Treatment." I'm in love. Actually, I'm in more than love. If "In Treatment" was a person, I would run away with it and marry it in a Las Vegas wedding chapel without question. No family. No friends. We could start a life. Maybe change our names ... read more

What happens when ‘Community’ meets ‘The Wire?’ Good question.

by Colin McGuire. 0 Comments

As I alluded to earlier this month, “Arrested Development” is my favorite television show of all time. I think it’s brilliant. I think it’s hilarious. And, of course, I think it’s entertaining. But what’s No. 2, you ask? Well, for me, it’s “The Wire”. Granted it isn’t as funny as “Arrested Development”, but with that said, what it may lack in hilarity, the show more than makes up for in intelligence. I mean, my goodness. There are college professors who teach entire semesters ... read more
