Defining “Childhood Ruined”

by Hannah Rudow. 0 Comments

“Childhood Ruined” isn’t one particular meme, but it is used as a term throughout the Internet referring to something that somehow sullies innocent childhood assumptions about the show or movie being referenced, which are usually children’s TV shows or movies, or Anime, normally from the 1980’s-present but also from older Disney movies. The phrase has been going around a lot in the past few years, but it seems to be enjoying a surge of popularity lately. An animated short (not appropriate ... read more

Pot smokers celebrate on “420” and this year Easter falls on April 20th, otherwise known as 4/20. The crossover of Easter with the day commonly celebrated with marijuana has caused hilarity through the Internet in the days leading up to the holiday. Hail Hydra! A Meme from Captain America: The Winter Soldier

by Hannah Rudow. 0 Comments

The movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier includes a terrorist organization from the Marvel universe called Hydra. During the movie one of the characters whispers the catchphrase "Hail Hydra" to another Hydra member in a serious but notably awkward manner. It reminded me of the way that Voldemort hugged Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier came out on April 4th and on the 6th the first images captioned with "Hail Hydra" began to ... read more

Calming Manatee- A Timeless and Underrated Meme

by Hannah Rudow. 0 Comments

Today’s meme, The Calming Manatee, isn’t a new thing at all- in fact it’s been around since 2012. I had forgotten all about this simple caption meme until seeing it posted on a friend’s Facebook page. It doesn’t have a lot of ‘practical purposes’ as a response image since it isn’t doesn’t feature a highly charged emotional reaction. Also the manatee itself is more of a ‘neutral’ animal. They aren’t ferocious, hip, or even furry like cats. They are dopey, ugly-cute, ... read more

Viral for the sake of Product Placement: Ellen at the Oscars with the Selfie

by Hannah Rudow. 0 Comments

The title of this post reads like the murder answer in a game of Clue and as such I intend to explain how this marketing/PR trick was so successful for Samsung. I didn’t watch the Oscars, I never do, but I was surprised how many photos of celebs walking the carpet that I came across just by being logged into Facebook. The most notable was the selfie taken by Bradley Cooper at the urging of Ellen Degeneres which shows both of them surrounded by other Celebs like Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep and ... read more

“Special Feeling” Meme

by Hannah Rudow. 0 Comments

Not long ago I spotted a link shared from one of the cosplay  Facebook pages that I follow. It was about a Japanese Meme, which roughly translates to “Special Feeling”. According to tumblr lore- “For people wondering what the hell this is, its a Japanese meme from a recent TV broadcast where a weather reporter was asking people on the street how the snow made them feel. The young couple was asked and the man blurted out “When you’re with your lover and it’s snowing, you are just ... read more

12th Doctor Outfit Meme

by Hannah Rudow. 0 Comments

The fans of the show Doctor Who are some of the silliest people on the internet. The fandom has been responsible for many memes and amusing reaction GIFs since the 2005 re-launch of the show. A large number of these fans are on Tumblr, a site also known for being goofy and heavy in memes and reaction GIFs. When the 11th Doctor left the show Peter Capaldi was revealed as the next actor who would take the role of The Doctor. The entire fandom wondered what sort of silly outfit Capaldi would have ... read more

Feels Face Meme

by Hannah Rudow. 0 Comments

“Feel” and “Feels” are the shortening of “feelings” which seems to have originated on Tumblr in 2012. It describes intense feelings, commonly those of sadness. I really like the term “feels” but the meme face that has recently been attributed to it is so ugly. When actively trying to avoid something you dislike, sometimes you can overlook how popular it is really becoming. (I guess I’m getting old because I thought Silly Bands were cool but Rainbow Loom seems so stupid. Colorful ... read more

Twilicane: Twilight Sparkle’s Scepter

by Hannah Rudow. 0 Comments

Twilicane, also known as Twicane, Twilight’s Cane, Twi-scepter, or most accurately Twilight Sparkle’s Scepter, is a forced meme that derives from the Season 4 Episode 2 of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. The Scepter (since that is a more accurate word for it, than cane) was drawn by storyboard artist for the show Sibsy. I personally think that the staring eyes and creepy/cute smile are somewhat reminiscent of other memes that involve staring such as the memes centered on the Pokemon ... read more
