So Nice for Bryce!

by Marien Hornyak. 0 Comments

It’s been a very interesting season for the Washington Nationals so far.  While they’re not tearing up the league like predicted, they have come back from a so-so April and had a breakthrough May so far to put themselved in a solid second place in the National League East. Not only have Jayson Werth and Denard Span returned from the Disabled List (oh, hang on – Werth just got placed BACK on the DL!), but left fielder Bryce Harper has been kicking butt this month, winning National League ... read more

Spring Training Games Don’t Count!

I have to start today’s blog post by acknowledging the fact that the Frederick News-Post has done a decent job printing Washington Nationals articles this season.  In a city that bleeds orange and black, it’s nice to see some increased coverage of the “other” Major League baseball team that’s a short driving distance from Frederick.  So thanks, FNP – we Nationals fans appreciate the recent articles in the sports section highlighting the Nationals’ hopes for Spring Training and goals ... read more

So What if it’s 12 Degrees? Spring Training Starts This Week!

by Marien Hornyak. 0 Comments

Hello, Washington Nationals fans! It’s finally that time of year again – time for Major League Baseball players to brush the mud off their cleats (wait, who am I kidding – they all get new shoes each spring), rub some oil on their gloves (do they get new gloves too?), and grab a new bucket of shiny white baseballs (with some residual mud from the Delaware river). Spring Training starts this week, and the Washington Nationals have a lot to look forward to and a lot to live up to as well.   After ... read more

Disappointed, but Looking Ahead

by Marien Hornyak. 0 Comments

As you probably know by now, the Washington Nationals were eliminated in the first round of this year's baseball playoffs.  Yes, just like in 2012, the team that led the National League in wins was defeated by the Wild Card team, in this case the San Francisco Giants.  All the talk of a "Beltway World Series" between the Nationals and Orioles quickly faded away and is now a distant memory.   So what happened?  Well the games weren't really that exciting.  In game 1, which my ... read more

Missing Ryan

Hello, Nationals fans!  Doesn’t it feel good to be in first place?  Right now the Washington Nationals are 1 1/2 games atop the NL East, with the Atlanta Braves breathing down our backs.  But it has taken a lot of toil and trouble to get to the top – the Nationals have battled injuries, hitting slumps, and Bryce Harper tantrums, and through it all, they still manage to persevere. Many critics have stated that the NL East has the most “uninteresting” race in Major League Baseball. ... read more

Halway Done and Looking Good!

Happy All-Star break, Nationals fans!  As we look back on the first half of the 2014 baseball season, we Washington Nationals fans should be pretty pleased with our team.  Not only are the Nationals in first place in the NL East (percentage points above the Atlanta Braves); the Nats have won 10 of their last 14 games, their bats have come alive, and their pitching continues to be solid. While some critics claim that the Nationals have “under-performed” during the first half of the season, ... read more

Ho hum!

by Marien Hornyak. 0 Comments

Hello, Washington Nationals fans!  I know it’s been a while since I’ve blogged, but there hasn’t been much excitement in Nats Nation lately – the team remains solidly in third place behind the Miami Marlins and the division-leading Atlanta Braves, and they still have some key players on the Disabled List.  It’s kind of a ho-hum time for Nationals fans as we wait for  Gio Gonzalez, Ryan Zimmerman, and Bryce Harper to come off the DL. On the bright side, leadoff hitter Denard Span has ... read more

How Much is Too Much Strasburg?

by Marien Hornyak. 0 Comments

If you follow the Washington Nationals like I do, you probably check the box scores in the newspaper or online, you're aware of the terrible start that relief pitcher Tyler Clippard has had, and you surely know about Ryan Zimmerman breaking his thumb and Wilson Ramos hurting his wrist.  So I'm not going to give you a summary of who has played well and who hasn't, who is on the Disabled List and who isn't, or how many different batting lineups Nationals' manager Matt Williams has used this season. ... read more

A New Era Begins for the Washington Nationals

by Marien Hornyak. 0 Comments

Hey Nationals fans!  I hope you all had a safe Halloween – did you all see my son dressed as Jayson Werth?  Anyway, now that the World Series is over, the Washington Nationals can make it official:  Matt Williams has been hired as their new manager. Williams, 47, becomes the fifth full-time manager in Nationals history. The team made the announcement on Thursday morning, and Williams will meet with the media Friday afternoon during a 2 p.m. press conference that will be televised live on ... read more

Officially Over :-(

by Marien Hornyak. 0 Comments

As you’ve probably heard by now, the Washington Nationals are officially out of this year’s post-season race because of a 4-3 loss to the Cardinals Monday night paired with wins from the Reds and the Pirates. Despite the Nationals’ last-minute surge in the past two months, which included a 29-game hitting streak by Denard Span, 11 home runs by Ryan Zimmerman in the month of September, and a possible batting title for Jayson Werth, a lot of things went wrong for the Nationals this season. ... read more
