Neo Geo Battle Coliseum Review

Hot off the heels from SNK comes Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. Originally, this was published for the PlayStation 2 back in 2005 in Japan and 2008 in the U.S. I must say, this is one of the most entertaining fighting games out there.

Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, also known as NGBC, boosts 40 characters from different SNK games: Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, King of the Monsters, Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug, World Heroes and Aggressors of Dark Kombat.

NGBC plays in a tag team format. You can perform Double Assaults (attacking the opponent with both of your team members) and certain characters can perform specific double assaults to deal serious damage to your opponent. The XBOX live version supports leaderboards, ranked match-ups, player match-ups and achievements.

For the most part, nothing has really changed from the PS2 version to the XBOX 360 version...except for HD graphics and online play!

There are two graphic filters for NGBC; the original crisp look and the smooth shaded look. I prefer the crisp, original look but it's totally up to user preference. Much to my surprise, the online play is smooth!!! To this day, SNK's netcode has been nothing but total fail. I don't how SNK pulled it off but the online gameplay is very very smooth, even from here to Japan. In playing over 60 matches, only 2 of them have been laggy.

The modes in NGBC are the following:

Arcade Mode - Arcade version with a boss at the last match. Training - Hone your skills in this mode. Versus - Go head to head against another player. Online - Take on opponents from around the world Survival - See how long you can last without losing! Tag Play - Fight the CPU and first person to knock out a character wins the match.

The gameplay is fast paced and its easy to turn the tide of battle in your favor. Swap out your partner, get in a Double Assault and just crush your opponent. This is personally one of my favorite SNK games and if you are looking for a decent fighting game on XBL marketplace, NGBC is up your alley!

Pros:

Smooth online play. Varied cast of characters. Easy game to pickup and play. All characters unlocked from the beginning.

Cons:

It doesn't cook breakfast. Some graphic edges could use a little more polishing. Dated and recycled sprites for some characters.
