It”s a Hitting Thing, Bro!

They have finally done it!  After many of us Nationals fans had gotten tired of complaining about the team’s lack of offense, they finally broke out of their funk and did some serious hitting.  Now, I don’t know if it’s because third baseman Ryan Zimmerman got a cortisone injection in his aching shoulder or if it was because the Nationals were playing at Coors Field (where even legally-blind me could get a base hit); regardless of the reason, the Nationals’ bats finally woke up, producing 49 hits in their last 3 games.

In Colorado, Ryan Zimmerman, Ian Desmond, Tyler Moore, and Adam LaRoche each hit two home runs.  Zimmerman raised his average from last week’s terrible .218 to a much-improved .235 – still way under his career average of .285, but he has definitely made some strides this past week, including getting his 1000th career hit.

Michael Morse got out of his slump too, going 9 for 19 in the 4-game series against the Rockies.  “The Beast” even hit a home run in today’s game, despite speculation that his hamstring was bothering him.  It’s nice to see the 3-, 4-, and 5-hitters finally producing!

So is this recent offensive improvement for real, or is it a fluke because the Nationals played their last 4 games in a hitters’ ball park?  This weekend’s series in Atlanta will determine that.  The Braves are 17-17 at home, but with ace Brandon Beachy out for the season (he had Tommy John surgery last week) and the Nationals playing well on the road, the Nats may take 2 of 3 in this weekend’s series.

So stay tuned, Nats fans!  As we close in on the first half of the season, the Nationals remain in first place and are playing some solid baseball.  And don’t forget to vote for Ian Desmond for the All-Star game (you have until 11:59 tonight)– he’s a much-improved shortstop, a solid hitter, and a commanding presence on the field and in the clubhouse.
