Rashard Lewis agreed to a two year $2.8 million contract with the Miami Heat. Lewis averaged 7.8 points and 3.9 rebounds in 26 minutes per game last season. He appeared in 26 games starting in 15. Lewis ranks eighth in NBA history in made three pointers with 1,690.
Obviously, Lewis was no loss to the New Orleans Hornets. Considering his release was a part of a salary cut for a rebuilding team, the move was great especially when you consider the Hornets dumped the contracts of Emeks Okafor and Trevor Ariza to acquire Lewis for the purpose of cutting.
As for the Heat, this was a low risk high reward pickup. Lewis was definitely overpaid by the Orlando Magic. His 6 year $112 million contract was one of the worst contracts in league history. The Heat, however, signed Lewis to a veteran’s minimum contract. He is a good three point shooter with Finals experience. He is also 6'10 which will come in handy for a size deprived Heat team. No it won't solve any of the problems that the Heat have down low as Lewis is a perimeter player, but some added height won't hurt. Like Allen, Lewis will love spotting up on the perimeter for open threes while on the court with the big three. Another good pick up for the defending NBA champions.
