As we close off week three, we have a few surprise teams performing well. The 3-0 Arizona Cardinals, 2-1 Minnesota Vikings, 2-1 Seattle Seahawks, and 2-1 New York Jets are all exceeding expectations early in the season. So, who should feel good and who should not get overconfident? Let's take a look.
The Arizona Cardinals are 3-0 thanks to home wins over the Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles and a road win against the New England Patriots. The Cardinals should be feeling good. They defeated two playoff caliber teams in the Patriots and Eagles and a young up and coming team in the Seahawks. The Cardinals have done this despite losing starting quarterback John Skelton in the middle of their week 2 game in New England. The Cardinals sport one of the best defenses in the league and hare 10-2 in their last 12 games. This team is for real.
With wins over the Jacksonville Jaguars and San Francisco 49ers, the Vikings have won two of their first three games. Their only blemish was a road loss to the Indianapolis Colts. So far this year the Vikings have looked much better than they did last year, but don't get too excited. The Jags and Colts are both bottom of the barrel teams. Splitting close games with them is an indication where this Vikings team really is. The win over the 49ers was more of a fluke. The Vikings were at home playing a 49ers squad that appeared to underestimate their opponents more than anything. Despite their record, the Vikings still have a ways to go.
The 2-1 Seattle Seahawks hold home victories over the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers. That sounds good until you remember the controversy surrounding the win over the Packers. Record aside, the Seahawks are closer to contender than pretender. Their loss at Arizona looks good after seeing the Cardinals go through the Patriots and Eagles. The Seahawks 27-7 clubbing of the Cowboys was impressive. The Seahawks very good performance against the Packers is an afterthought because of the controversial finish to the game, but it should not be overlooked. The Seahawks have one of the best defenses in the league. If quarterback Russell Wilson doesn't do anything to lose games, this team will be in the hunt for the playoffs.
After an atrocious preseason offensively, the Jets find themselves sitting at 2-1 thanks to divisional wins over the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins. Their loss was to the Pittsburgh Steelers. I believe the Jets are lucky to be 2-1. The win over the Bills was legit, but I think the jets performance against the Steelers is their true identity. Simply put, the Jets ate full of offensive deficiencies. They were extremely fortunate to escape Miami with a win over the Dolphins. The Jets offense was horrible. Quarterback Mark Sanchez has lost any semblance of accuracy on his throws. This team will still be lucky to finish at .500.
