Taxi Voucher Program – Community Input Requested

by Frederick TransIT Community Relations Manager. 0 Comments

Here in Frederick County, the population of seniors (age 60+) and persons with disabilities is increasing every year. This suggests that the demand for para-transit service will increase beyond the capacity of the current TransIT-plus services before too long. Therefore, TransIT Services of Frederick County is investigating the introduction of a Taxi Voucher Program to supplement existing TransIT-plus service.

It is clear to us from the input we got when our director, Nancy Norris, presented information to the County Commissioners at an open meeting in May that there is a lot of confusion and worry about this proposal. County residents who rely on TransIT-plus to get to and from medical appointments, social outings, and shopping trips are worried that we intend to replace the TransIT-plus service with taxis. This is not the case. Rather, the taxi vouchers would give people another transportation option.

We are very interested in receiving Input from community partners, current TransIT-plus users, and others as we explore the design of this supplemental Taxi Voucher Program. Various parameters, including days and hours of operation, age restrictions, mileage limitations, and cost-share of the participants are yet to be determined.

To this end, TransIT will hold three (3) public meetings to discuss this proposed program:

Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at 1:00 p.m.at C. Burr Artz Library Community Room, 110 E. Patrick Street (The Library does not promote or endorse the views of the program sponsors or presenters.) Thursday, July 18, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Frederick Senior Center, 1440 Taney Avenue Friday, July 19, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Winchester Hall, First Floor Hearing Room, 12 E. Church Street

Transit staff will present an overview of the proposed Taxi Voucher Program and solicit input from attendees concerning the parameters, issues and suggestions. This input will be considered in the final proposal.

Public comments on this proposal will be accepted until Tuesday, July 30, 2013, and must include your name and contact information.
