The Artists’ Gallery’s 13th Annual Box Show opens Friday. More than 50 artists participate, both TAG members and their guests. It’s always a fun exhibit, but this could be the best yet.
We were each given a box and had several weeks to create a work of art with it. This year, instead of the usual simple wooden boxes, we got to choose from an array of cigar boxes. It took awhile to decide; there were some beauties! I chose a fairly small, plain one with a sliding lid. I liked the idea of something hidden peeking out.
The head and arms came from two different baby dolls I picked up at yard sales. Creepy. Now there’s a headless doll and an armless one in a drawer in my studio.
I then attached toothpicks, small shells and rocks.
Finally, the doll and the box were painted with acrylics, including the inside to simulate a cave painting. A flameless candle stands in for a fire.
While delivering my box, I got the chance to see a few others: a robot, a comfy chair, a flock of chickens. I can’t wait to see the rest.
If you’d like to post your box-show creation on this site, send a photo (no larger than 1MB) and a description to firstname.lastname@example.org.
