Herons Courting, by TAG member artist Joan Tarbell Plato

Joan Tarbell Plato is a member of The Artists’ Gallery. Below, she tells us a little about her entry for TAG’s 13th Annual Box Show.

“Herons Courting” began with an elongated cigar box combined with my love of herons.

I have never seen two herons courting, but have read about the offering of the branch from the male to the female.

After using acrylic paints to portray the two herons, one on each side of the box and their upward wings of excitement, I then pondered the inside. Using my digitized original photos of herons taken on Chincoteaque Island, I created a small handmade book depicting the lands herons inhabit.

Herons love fish so the book was adorned with an oyster shell.
