At the start of the season, most of the players and coaches on the Walkersville football team would have been happy with progress. The Lions had finished the previous two seasons at 2-8 and 5-5. Merely a winning season in 2015 would have been a logical and welcome step in the right direction for the program.
Nobody really saw this coming. The Lions are presently 11-2 and will play for the Class 2A championship Saturday night at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Their opponent in the state championship ... read more
For the first time in more than a decade, Frederick County was nearly wiped out in the first round of the high school football playoffs.
But Walkersville (9-2) rallied for a 26-14 victory in Columbia over Oakland Mills, sparing the county the indignity of not having a regional finalist for the first time since the playoffs expanded in 2003.
Linganore (10-1), Oakdale (8-3) and St. John's-Catholic Prep (9-1-1) were all beaten last weekend. After a furious comeback, Linganore fell to visiting ... read more
Though there was little drama regarding playoff spots, the final week of the regular season certainly didn't lack intrigue in Frederick County.
Tuscarora capped its fine season by upsetting playoff-bound Oakdale, and Walkersville snapped a 10-game losing streak against Middletown to wrap up its first playoff spot since 2012.
The Bears and Lions will be joined in the postseason by Linganore, which capped its second straight unblemished regular season with a no-fills, 35-0 home win over chief ... read more
Rivalry Week is upon us here in Frederick County.
Linganore faces Urbana, Walkersville squares off with Middletown, Thomas Johnson meets Frederick, Catoctin plays Brunswick and, in a game between teams without a true, natural rival, Oakdale matches up with Tuscarora. These games, at the very least, should add some intrigue to the final week of the regular season, especially since most of the local teams won't be in the playoffs.
Walkersville (7-2), for example, needs to beat Middletown (4-5) ... read more
Week 8 of the high school football season in Frederick County did not offer many surprises. There weren't even that many close games.
Linganore (8-0) routed Westminster on the road. Oakdale (7-1) did the same to Thomas Johnson (3-5). Walkersville (6-2) had little trouble with visiting Brunswick (0-8), and Tuscarora (5-3) easily handled Watkins Mill.
The most competitive game in the area was Urbana's 14-10 home win over Middletown (4-4) that saw the Hawks (4-4) overcome a 10-point deficit in ... read more
With three weeks remaining in the regular season, the playoff picture is becoming clearer as it relates to Frederick County teams.
Linganore (7-0) and Oakdale (6-1) are in good shape in the Class 3A West region, while Walkersville (5-2) is in good position in the 2A West.
The other fringe contenders are Tuscarora (4-3) in the 3A West and Middletown (4-3) in the 2A West. But both of those teams will likely need to win their final three games in the regular season and receive lots of help to ... read more
There are two distinct ways to look at last Friday's epic Linganore-Oakdale game.
On one hand, you can ask how Oakdale blew it. The Bears were clearly the better team for three quarters. They had a 13-point lead and numerous chances to add to it. They simply couldn't deliver the knockout blow. Turnovers, penalties and a missed extra point ultimately conspired to doom the Bears in a crushing, 21-20 loss. The real killers were the three lost fumbles deep in Linganore territory. Had any of those ... read more
Well, on paper anyway, the game of the season in Frederick County will be played this Friday when unbeaten Linganore (5-0) travels to face unbeaten Oakdale (5-0). It's arguably the biggest regular-season game the Bears have played in five varsity seasons. Linganore, on the other hand, has played a million games like this. But it definitely represents the Lancers' biggest test of the season.
Oakdale is winning games largely the way Linganore won them last season. That's with good defense and a ... read more
After four impressive weeks of football, Walkersville takes a litmus test this Friday to get a better idea of where it stands in the county pecking order.
The unbeaten Lions (4-0) travel to Linganore to face the unbeaten Lancers (4-0) in the most intriguing local game of Week 4. Linganore, a Class 3A school, is the clear favorite. But the Lancers will have to play reasonably well to win. Walkersville, a 2A school, has given Linganore fits in recent years, winning the 2011 and '12 match ups and ... read more
For a five minute stretch of the third quarter last Friday, the Linganore offense shifted into its top gear, scoring three touchdowns in that span on the way to a 29-7 victory at Middletown.
The Lancers were expected to play with that high-octane efficiency on offense all season. But, outside of that five minute stretch, they really haven't played their best. Still, that five-minute spurt showed everyone what they are capable of, and, if they start playing that way more consistently, they will ... read more
